1. Mountain Daylight Time
Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations
Summer time of the Mountain zone, six hours behind UTC, observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November in places such as Denver, Salt Lake City, Boise and Edmonton.
Example: Trailhead shuttle departs at 6:00 a.m. MDT from the visitor center.
During MDT the Mountain zone shares its offset with Central Standard Time. Arizona does not switch, so in summer Phoenix is an hour behind Denver even though both are called Mountain Time. The zone boundary splits Idaho, whose northern panhandle follows Pacific time.
2. Mobile data terminal
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
Computer mounted in a police car that lets officers receive dispatch calls, run plates and names, view maps and write reports without using the radio. Also called a mobile data computer (MDC).
Example: The officer ran the plate on her MDT before walking up to the car.
MDTs reduce radio traffic and connect to state databases and NCIC. Laptops and rugged tablets have replaced earlier dedicated terminals. Distracted driving from in-car computers is a recognized safety concern for officers.
