MDiv stands for Master of Divinity, a degree abbreviation.

Three-year graduate degree of roughly 72 to 90 credits that is the standard preparation for ordained ministry in many Protestant denominations and is also earned by many Catholic seminarians. It covers Bible, theology, church history, preaching, pastoral care and supervised field education.

Example: Ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA) normally requires an MDiv from an accredited seminary.

Usage notes

Written M.Div. Accredited programs are recognized by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). Many programs require biblical Greek and Hebrew. Before about 1970, American seminaries awarded the same degree as the BD, and many allowed graduates to exchange their BD for an MDiv.
