1. Instagram
Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations
Common shorthand for Instagram, the photo- and video-sharing app owned by Meta. Used in bios, captions, business cards and conversation, as in "follow me on IG" or "IG story."
Example: Check my IG for photos from the trip, link's in my bio.
Also called "insta" or "the gram." Instagram launched in 2010 and was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for about $1 billion. In government contexts IG means inspector general, an auditing official. Neutral and widely understood across age groups.
2. Inspector General
Military · Military Term Abbreviations · also used in government
Office that investigates complaints of fraud, waste, abuse, misconduct and reprisal and inspects units for readiness and compliance. Each military command of sufficient size has an IG, and the Department of Defense has an independent statutory inspector general.
Example: She filed an IG complaint alleging reprisal after reporting safety violations.
Service members are protected by law from retaliation for contacting an IG or member of Congress. The first Inspector General of the Continental Army was Baron Friedrich von Steuben, who drilled troops at Valley Forge in 1778. Civilian federal agencies have their own IGs under the Inspector General Act of 1978.
3. Immunoglobulin (Ig)
Science & Engineering · Biology Abbreviations
Y-shaped protein, also called an antibody, produced by B cells to recognize specific foreign molecules. Humans make five classes distinguished by their heavy chains, IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE and IgD, which differ in where they act and what they do.
Example: Allergic reactions are driven by Ig of the E class binding to mast cells.
Each immunoglobulin has two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains; the tips of the arms form the antigen-binding sites. Gerald Edelman and Rodney Porter shared the 1972 Nobel Prize for determining antibody structure. Intravenous Ig (IVIG), pooled from thousands of donors, treats immune deficiencies.
4. Investment grade
Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations
Credit rating category for bonds and issuers rated BBB- or higher by S&P and Fitch or Baa3 or higher by Moody's, indicating relatively low default risk. Many pension funds, insurers and banks are restricted to holding IG debt.
Example: The company's upgrade to IG cut its borrowing costs and opened the bond market to new buyers.
Companies at the lowest IG tier are watched closely because a downgrade to high yield, becoming a "fallen angel," forces some investors to sell. BBB-rated debt makes up about half of the US investment-grade corporate market. IG spreads over Treasuries are a key gauge of credit conditions.
