mbar stands for Millibar, an engineering unit abbreviation.

One thousandth of a bar, equal to one hectopascal, the traditional unit of atmospheric pressure on weather maps. Gas appliance pressures in the UK and Europe are also set in mbar.

Example: UK gas boilers need a working inlet pressure of about 20 mbar.

Usage notes

Many meteorologists now say hectopascals, but the numbers are identical, so a 980 mbar low is a 980 hPa low. Vacuum pumps and leak testers also read in mbar. US weather reports give pressure in inches of mercury instead.
