MAJ stands for Major (US Army), a US Army rank abbreviation.
First field-grade officer rank in the Army, pay grade O-4, marked by a gold oak leaf. Majors serve as battalion executive officers and operations officers, on brigade and division staffs, and as planners, instructors and program managers.
Example: MAJ Chen, the battalion S-3, published the fragmentary order at 2100.
Usage notes
Army style uses MAJ, while the Air Force, Space Force and Marine Corps write Maj, as does AP style with a period. Majors attend Intermediate Level Education, taught by the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. Holding the key operations or executive officer job is considered important for later battalion command.
