PFC stands for Private First Class (US Army), a US Army rank abbreviation.
Army enlisted rank at pay grade E-3, worn as one chevron above one rocker. Promotion normally comes after twelve months of service and four months as a PV2, and a PFC is expected to master individual skills and help train newer privates.
Example: PFC Nguyen earned an Army Achievement Medal for running the motor pool's dispatch log.
Usage notes
The same title sits at different grades: an Army PFC is an E-3, while a Marine Corps PFC is an E-2. AP style writes Pfc. before a name. The curved rocker beneath the chevron is what distinguishes the insignia from that of a PV2, and enlistees with enough college credit can start at this grade.
