Microsoft volume-activation technology that lets organizations activate Windows and Office on their own network instead of contacting Microsoft for each machine. Clients must reconnect to the KMS host at least every 180 days to stay activated.

Example: Laptops that haven't joined the VPN in six months show activation errors because they can't reach the KMS server.

A KMS host activates clients only after a minimum count is reached: 25 for Windows client systems and 5 for servers and Office. Unauthorized "KMS activators" are a common piracy tool and frequently bundle malware. In cloud security, KMS also refers to key management services such as AWS KMS, which store and manage encryption keys.

2. Kill myself (hyperbole)

Hyperbolic expression of embarrassment, frustration or boredom, as in "I have three exams tomorrow kms." Common among teens online and in texts, almost always as exaggeration.

Despite its usual joking use, mental health advocates warn that it can mask real distress, so take repeated or unusual use seriously and check in. In the US, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline offers support by call or text. Never appropriate in professional contexts.
