1. Kuiper belt object
Science & Engineering · Astronomy & Space Abbreviations
Icy body orbiting in the Kuiper belt, a disk beyond Neptune extending roughly 30 to 50 astronomical units from the Sun. Pluto is the best-known KBO; others include the dwarf planets Makemake and Haumea and the contact binary Arrokoth.
Example: New Horizons flew past the KBO Arrokoth on January 1, 2019, 6.6 billion kilometers from Earth.
David Jewitt and Jane Luu discovered the first KBO besides Pluto and its moon Charon in 1992. The belt is named after Gerard Kuiper, who speculated about such objects in 1951, though Kenneth Edgeworth had suggested similar ideas earlier. Many short-period comets originate there.
2. KBO League (Korea Baseball Organization)
Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations
South Korea's top professional baseball league, with ten teams and a season that ends in the Korean Series. Internationally it is known for exuberant bat flips and organized cheering sections led by cheerleaders and chant leaders.
Example: ESPN broadcast KBO games in 2020 when the pandemic delayed the start of the MLB season.
Founded in 1982 with six teams. Korea Baseball Organization is the governing body, and the competition itself is officially the KBO League. Stars such as Hyun-jin Ryu and Jung-hoo Lee moved from the KBO to MLB, while foreign players with brief MLB careers often find regular roles there.
