LEA stands for Local educational agency, a K-12 education abbreviation.
Federal legal term for a public body that runs schools locally, usually a school district, though some charter schools and county or regional agencies also qualify. Federal funds under Title I and IDEA flow to LEAs.
Example: Each LEA must submit its Title I plan to the state by June 30.
Usage notes
LEAs are responsible for providing special education services under IDEA. The state counterpart is the SEA (state educational agency). Charter schools that are their own LEA carry full special education responsibility themselves.
