1. Long-distance relationship
Texting & Internet Slang · Dating and Relationship Abbreviations
Romantic relationship in which partners live far apart, often in different cities or countries, and rely on calls, texts and visits.
Example: Two years of LDR and we finally live in the same city!
LDR couples share tips on time zones, video dates and travel costs in online communities such as r/LongDistance. The COVID-19 pandemic made LDRs more common when travel was restricted. Related abbreviations include IRL meetups and "closing the distance."
2. Light-dependent resistor
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Component whose resistance falls as light intensity rises, typically from millions of ohms in darkness to a few hundred ohms in bright light. LDRs, also called photoresistors or photocells, switch on streetlights and night-lights at dusk.
Example: The night-light uses an LDR to switch on automatically when the room goes dark.
Common LDRs are made of cadmium sulfide, which falls under RoHS restrictions on cadmium, so photodiodes and phototransistors are replacing them in new designs. They respond relatively slowly, taking tens of milliseconds or more, which suits light sensing but not data reception.
3. Loan-to-deposit ratio
Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations
Bank's total loans divided by its total deposits, showing how much of its deposit funding it has lent out. A ratio near or above 100 percent suggests the bank relies on other funding and may have less liquidity.
Example: At 68 percent, the bank's LDR leaves plenty of room to grow lending without new funding.
Ratios of roughly 80 to 90 percent are often considered healthy for traditional banks, though the right level depends on the business model. Chinese regulators formerly capped the LDR at 75 percent before removing the limit in 2015. Investors watch the ratio closely during periods of deposit outflows.
