JDBC
Stands forJava Database Connectivity
CategoriesTechnology & Computing

JDBC stands for Java Database Connectivity, a data & database abbreviation.

The standard Java API for connecting to relational databases and executing SQL, with a driver supplied by each database vendor. Frameworks such as Hibernate and Spring Data are built on top of it.

Example: The JDBC URL jdbc:postgresql://db:5432/app sets the host, port and database name.

Usage notes

Introduced by Sun in 1997 with JDK 1.1. PreparedStatement objects, which keep SQL separate from parameters, are the standard defense against SQL injection in Java. Connection pools such as HikariCP reuse connections because opening them is expensive.
