CategoriesTechnology & Computing

ODBC stands for Open Database Connectivity, a data & database abbreviation.

A standard API that lets applications reach many different databases through drivers, so the same program can query SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL or even spreadsheets without code changes.

Example: Install the ODBC driver, create a DSN, then connect to it from Excel or Tableau.

Usage notes

Released by Microsoft in 1992, based on the SQL Access Group's Call Level Interface. A DSN (data source name) stores the connection details. Java's JDBC followed the same idea, and BI tools still rely heavily on ODBC drivers to reach cloud warehouses.
