CategoriesTechnology & Computing

MVCC stands for Multiversion concurrency control, a data & database abbreviation.

A concurrency method in which a database keeps several versions of each row, so readers see a consistent snapshot while writers create new versions, and reads and writes rarely block each other. PostgreSQL, Oracle and MySQL's InnoDB engine use it.

Example: Thanks to MVCC, the long report query doesn't block the checkout transactions.

Usage notes

Described in academic work around 1980 and commercialized early in DEC's Rdb/VMS and InterBase. Old row versions must be cleaned up, which in PostgreSQL is the job of VACUUM. Snapshot isolation built on MVCC can still allow some anomalies, such as write skew.
