IVIG stands for Intravenous immunoglobulin, a drug abbreviation.
Concentrated antibodies pooled from the plasma of thousands of donors, given IV to replace antibodies in immune deficiencies and to modulate the immune system in conditions such as Kawasaki disease, immune thrombocytopenia, Guillain-Barre syndrome and CIDP.
Example: IVIG 2 g/kg over 12 hours for Kawasaki disease with aspirin.
Usage notes
IVIG carries a boxed warning for blood clots and kidney failure, and slower infusion rates, hydration and avoiding sucrose-containing products reduce these risks. Headache and aseptic meningitis can follow large doses. Supply depends on plasma donations, and the US provides a large share of the world's plasma.
