GPI stands for Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor, a drug class abbreviation.
IV antiplatelet drugs, eptifibatide and tirofiban, that block the final common pathway of platelet aggregation. They are used selectively during percutaneous coronary intervention, especially with large clot burden.
Example: GPI eptifibatide bolus given in the cath lab for no-reflow.
Usage notes
Abciximab, the first agent and a monoclonal antibody fragment, is no longer marketed in the US. Bleeding and a sudden fall in platelet count are the main risks. Routine use has declined since potent oral P2Y12 inhibitors became standard. Also written GP IIb/IIIa inhibitor.
