IFG stands for Impaired fasting glucose, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Category of prediabetes defined by a fasting glucose between 100 and 125 mg/dL (ADA) or 110 and 125 mg/dL (WHO). It signals raised risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Example: IFG at 112 mg/dL; lifestyle counseling and repeat fasting glucose annually.
Usage notes
IFG reflects mainly hepatic insulin resistance, while impaired glucose tolerance reflects muscle resistance, so the two overlap only partly. The ADA lowered its threshold from 110 to 100 mg/dL in 2003. Structured lifestyle programs reduced progression to diabetes by 58 percent in the Diabetes Prevention Program.
