HiSET stands for High School Equivalency Test, a standardized test abbreviation.

High school equivalency exam introduced by ETS in 2014 with five subtests, reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies, each scored from 1 to 20. Passing generally requires at least 8 on every subtest, a combined total of 45 and a minimum essay score.

Example: The state switched its equivalency program to the HiSET, which is offered on paper as well as computer.

Usage notes

PSI Services bought the program from ETS in 2021, and ETS then acquired PSI in 2024. States choose the GED, the HiSET or both. Because a paper version remains available, the HiSET is common in correctional education and rural testing sites.
