GED stands for General Educational Development, a standardized test abbreviation.
High school equivalency credential earned by passing four computer-based tests, mathematical reasoning, reasoning through language arts, science and social studies, each scored from 100 to 200 with 145 needed to pass. Employers, colleges and the military generally accept it in place of a high school diploma.
Example: After passing the GED, he enrolled at the community college and started an HVAC certificate.
Usage notes
Created in 1942 by the American Council on Education so returning World War II veterans could document their learning. Since 2014 the GED Testing Service, a joint venture of ACE and Pearson, has delivered the test only on computer. Scores of 165 or higher earn a College Ready designation. It is often wrongly expanded as "General Equivalency Diploma".
