HbS stands for Hemoglobin S, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Abnormal hemoglobin produced by a single DNA change that replaces glutamic acid with valine at position 6 of the beta-globin chain. When deoxygenated, HbS molecules stick together into long polymers that distort red cells into sickle shapes.

Example: Hemoglobin electrophoresis: HbS 88%, HbF 9%, no HbA; consistent with sickle cell anemia.

Usage notes

The percentage of HbS is measured by electrophoresis or high-performance liquid chromatography. Exchange transfusion lowers HbS to below about 30 percent in stroke and severe acute chest syndrome, and hydroxyurea works partly by raising fetal hemoglobin (HbF), which blocks sickling. Other variants include HbC and HbE.
