FVL stands for Factor V Leiden, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Most common inherited predisposition to blood clots in people of European ancestry, a single gene variant that makes clotting factor V resistant to inactivation by activated protein C. About 5 percent of white Americans carry one copy.
Example: Unprovoked DVT at 29 on combined oral contraceptives; heterozygous FVL identified.
Usage notes
Discovered in 1994 by researchers in Leiden, the Netherlands. One copy raises clot risk several-fold and two copies much more, and estrogen-containing contraceptives or pregnancy multiply that risk. Most carriers never develop a clot, so routine screening of the general population is not recommended. It is also called activated protein C resistance.
