HAZ stands for Heat-affected zone, an engineering abbreviation.
Region of base metal next to a weld or thermal cut that did not melt but was heated enough to change its microstructure and properties, sometimes becoming harder, more brittle or less corrosion-resistant. Many weld failures begin in the HAZ.
Example: Hardness testing showed the HAZ exceeded 350 HV, so the procedure was revised to add preheat.
Usage notes
Preheating, controlled heat input and post-weld heat treatment limit damaging changes in the HAZ. In stainless steel the HAZ can become sensitized to intergranular corrosion. Laser and electron-beam welding produce narrow HAZs because of their concentrated heat.
