FoS stands for Factor of safety, an engineering abbreviation.
Ratio of a structure's or component's strength to the maximum load it is expected to carry. A factor of safety of 2 means a part could withstand twice its design load; values depend on consequences of failure and uncertainty in loads and materials.
Example: The lifting lug was designed with an FoS of 5 against ultimate strength, as the rigging code requires.
Usage notes
Aerospace structures use low factors, typically about 1.5, to save weight, backed by extensive testing, while elevator cables and lifting equipment use much higher values. Also written FS or SF. The related "margin of safety" equals the factor of safety minus one.
