GMAW stands for Gas metal arc welding, an engineering abbreviation.
American Welding Society name for MIG and MAG welding, a semi-automatic process using a continuously fed consumable wire and a shielding gas. GMAW is easily automated and dominates robotic welding in automotive production.
Example: The robotic GMAW cells weld each car body subframe in under a minute.
Usage notes
Metal transfer modes include short-circuit, globular, spray and pulsed spray, chosen by current, voltage and gas. Short-circuit transfer suits thin sheet and out-of-position work, while spray transfer gives high deposition on thick plate.
