GTP stands for Guanosine triphosphate, a biology abbreviation.
Energy-rich nucleotide used as an RNA building block and as a fuel and on-off switch in many cellular processes. G proteins are active when bound to GTP and inactive when they hydrolyze it to GDP, a timer mechanism that controls signaling, protein synthesis and the assembly of microtubules.
Example: The mutant Ras protein stays locked in its GTP-bound state, driving uncontrolled cell growth.
Usage notes
GTP is produced directly in one step of the citric acid cycle in many cells. Mutations in the Ras family of GTP-binding proteins are found in about a fifth to a quarter of human cancers. The related signaling molecule cGMP mediates the effects of nitric oxide and drugs such as sildenafil.
