GPCR stands for G protein-coupled receptor, a biology abbreviation.
Large family of cell-surface receptors that snake seven times through the membrane and relay signals by activating G proteins inside the cell. GPCRs detect light, odors, tastes, hormones and neurotransmitters, and roughly a third of approved drugs act on them.
Example: The new migraine drug blocks a GPCR for the neuropeptide CGRP.
Usage notes
Humans have about 800 GPCR genes, around half of them for smell. Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for revealing how GPCRs work, including the first crystal structure of a GPCR bound to its G protein. Also called seven-transmembrane (7TM) receptors.
