1. First-generation antipsychotic
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
Older "typical" antipsychotics, such as haloperidol, chlorpromazine, fluphenazine and perphenazine, that strongly block dopamine D2 receptors. They treat psychosis and agitation and are used in delirium and as antiemetics.
Example: Agitation: haloperidol (FGA) 5 mg IM; monitor for dystonia and QTc.
Chlorpromazine, introduced in 1952, was the first antipsychotic and transformed psychiatric care. FGAs commonly cause movement side effects (dystonia, akathisia, parkinsonism) and, with long use, tardive dyskinesia. Long-acting injectable forms of haloperidol and fluphenazine remain important. In rehabilitation FGA means Functional Gait Assessment.
2. Functional Gait Assessment
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Ten-item walking balance test that modified the Dynamic Gait Index, adding tasks such as walking with a narrow base, eyes closed and backward. Each item scores 0 to 3, for a total of 30.
Example: FGA 19/30; fall risk education and balance HEP provided.
Published by Diane Wrisley and colleagues in 2004 to reduce the ceiling effect of the DGI. Scores of about 22 or lower predict falls in community-dwelling older adults. It is recommended in neurological physical therapy core outcome sets.
3. Field goal attempts
Sports · Basketball Abbreviations
Number of shots from the field a player or team takes, excluding free throws. High FGA numbers signal heavy scoring responsibility.
Example: He needed 31 FGA to score 34 points, an inefficient night.
Volume scorers in the NBA take 20 or more attempts a game. Pace and minutes affect totals, so per-36 or per-100-possession figures are used for comparisons. "Shot selection" refers to the quality of those attempts.
