English abbreviation for East Germany, the communist state founded on October 7, 1949, in the Soviet occupation zone. It built the Berlin Wall in 1961 and ceased to exist when Germany reunified on October 3, 1990.

In German the state was the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik). East Berlin served as its capital. GDR was also its IOC country code, and East German athletes won more medals than many far larger countries.
