Designation for mail to Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel aboard ships or at overseas naval installations, written in the city field, as in FPO AP 96349. A ship's unit number plus the FPO ZIP code lets mail follow the vessel wherever it deploys.

Example: Address care packages to the sailor's ship using the FPO AE ZIP code listed on the command's website.

Like APO mail, FPO mail is charged domestic rates and follows military size and customs-form rules. The state slot must be AA, AE or AP, depending on the region. During World War II, addresses ending FPO New York or FPO San Francisco routed mail to the Atlantic and Pacific fleets.
