G8 stands for Group of Eight, an international organization abbreviation.
Name of the G7 forum of major economies from 1997 to 2014, when Russia took part as the eighth member. It reverted to the G7 after Russia was suspended over its annexation of Crimea.
Example: The 2005 G8 summit at Gleneagles focused on debt relief for Africa.
Usage notes
Russia was invited to join the meetings in the 1990s and became a full participant in 1997. The 2014 summit planned for Sochi was canceled and replaced by a G7 meeting in Brussels. Some politicians have since proposed readmitting Russia, a suggestion other members have rejected.
