CategoriesUnits & Measurements

FY stands for Fiscal year, a time abbreviation also used in government and business.

The 12-month accounting period a government or company uses for budgets and financial reports, which need not match the calendar year. The US federal fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30, so FY2027 began on October 1, 2026.

Example: The agency's FY2027 budget request includes $4 billion for bridge repairs.

Usage notes

US federal fiscal years are named for the calendar year in which they end. The UK government's financial year runs from April 1 to March 31 (the personal tax year from April 6), Australia's from July 1 to June 30, and Japan's and India's from April 1. Many US retailers end their fiscal year in late January, after holiday returns. British usage often says financial year, with the same abbreviation.
