FRAP stands for Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure, a litigation abbreviation.
Practitioner shorthand for the rules governing appeals in the US courts of appeals, from the notice of appeal through briefing, appendices, oral argument and rehearing. Each circuit adds local rules on topics such as excerpts of record and argument procedures.
Example: Under FRAP 4, the notice of appeal must be filed within 30 days after entry of judgment.
Usage notes
Pronounced "frap". The rules took effect in 1968. Missing the civil appeal deadline is a jurisdictional defect that courts cannot excuse, as the Supreme Court held in Bowles v. Russell (2007). The Bluebook form is "Fed. R. App. P."
