EUO stands for Examination under oath, a litigation abbreviation.
Sworn questioning of an insured by the insurer's attorney, conducted under a policy condition requiring cooperation in the investigation of a claim. It is used especially for large or suspicious property, auto and theft claims.
Example: The insurer scheduled an EUO and requested five years of tax returns before deciding the fire claim.
Usage notes
Unlike a deposition, an EUO takes place before any lawsuit and is a contractual duty; refusing to attend can forfeit coverage. A court reporter records the testimony, and the insured may bring a lawyer. Insurers use the transcript if the claim is later litigated.
