1. Diplomatic Post Office
Geography & Places · US Territory and Military Mail Abbreviations · also used in general use
Postal designation for US embassies and consulates abroad that lets State Department employees and their families receive mail at domestic rates. Addresses mirror the military format, with a unit number, DPO in the city field and AA, AE or AP as the state.
Example: Send it to the DPO AE address the embassy gave you, not to the embassy's street address.
DPO mail is subject to stricter limits on liquids, lithium batteries and certain goods than ordinary domestic mail, and some posts restrict package size. In finance DPO means days payable outstanding, and under the GDPR it means data protection officer.
2. Days payable outstanding
Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations
Average number of days a company takes to pay its suppliers, calculated as accounts payable divided by cost of goods sold, multiplied by days in the period. A higher DPO means the company holds on to its cash longer.
Example: Negotiating 75-day terms with suppliers raised DPO from 41 to 63 days and freed up $90 million.
Large retailers and manufacturers often push DPO higher, sometimes through supply chain finance programs, which now must be disclosed under both US GAAP and IFRS. Extremely long DPO can strain supplier relationships. DPO is subtracted in the cash conversion cycle calculation.
3. Days past ovulation
Texting & Internet Slang · Parenting Forum Abbreviations
Number of days since ovulation, used to time pregnancy tests and track symptoms during the two-week wait, as in "testing at 12 DPO."
Example: At 9 DPO with a faint line, too early to tell?
Implantation of a fertilized egg usually happens about 6 to 12 days after ovulation, so tests taken before roughly 10 DPO often give false negatives. Forum members compare symptoms by DPO, though doctors note early symptoms vary widely.
4. Direct preference optimization
Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations
A method for aligning language models with human preferences that trains directly on pairs of preferred and rejected answers, without a separate reward model or reinforcement learning loop. It is simpler and more stable than classic RLHF.
Example: We replaced the PPO stage with DPO and cut alignment training from days to hours.
Introduced by Rafael Rafailov and colleagues at Stanford in 2023 in the paper "Your Language Model Is Secretly a Reward Model". It quickly became popular for fine-tuning open-weight models. In data protection, DPO means data protection officer, a role the EU's GDPR requires at some organizations.
