EIR stands for Entrepreneur in residence, a job title abbreviation.
Experienced founder or executive hosted by a venture capital firm, accelerator, university or corporation, usually temporarily, to develop a new startup idea, advise portfolio companies or evaluate deals. Many EIRs eventually launch a company backed by the host.
Example: After selling her startup, she joined the venture firm as an EIR to work on her next idea.
Usage notes
EIR roles are often modestly paid, with the expectation that the host gets the first chance to invest. Universities use EIRs to help commercialize research. In UK government, EIR also refers to the Environmental Information Regulations, an unrelated meaning.
