F.2d stands for Federal Reporter, Second Series, a legal citation abbreviation.
Covering federal appellate decisions from 1924 to 1993 in 999 volumes, this series also printed opinions of specialized courts such as the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals. Much twentieth-century federal case law, including Learned Hand's best-known opinions, is cited to it.
Example: United States v. Carroll Towing Co., 159 F.2d 169 (2d Cir. 1947), announced the Hand formula for negligence.
Usage notes
The Bluebook writes ordinal series as "2d" and "3d", never "2nd" or "3rd", and closes up the abbreviation: F.2d, not F. 2d. Until the Federal Supplement began in 1932, F.2d also included district court opinions. Its successor, F.3d, began in 1993.
