EWR stands for Newark Liberty International Airport, an airport code abbreviation.

One of the three major New York City area airports, located in Newark, New Jersey, about 15 miles southwest of Manhattan. It is a major hub for United Airlines and is linked to the Northeast Corridor by the AirTrain.

Example: EWR is closer than JFK from my office in Jersey City, so book me on the United nonstop.

Usage notes

ICAO code KEWR. Opened in 1928, it was the first major airport serving the New York region. Codes beginning with N were reserved for the US Navy, so Newark took letters from inside its name: nEWaRk. "Liberty" was added in 2002 to honor the victims of September 11, 2001, including those aboard United Flight 93, which departed from Newark.
