EtOAc stands for Ethyl acetate, a chemistry abbreviation.
Sweet-smelling ester, CH3COOC2H5, used as a moderately polar solvent for extractions and column chromatography, often mixed with hexanes. Outside the lab it is the solvent in many nail-polish removers and glues and is used to decaffeinate coffee and tea.
Example: The product eluted with 20% EtOAc in hexanes and was isolated as a white solid.
Usage notes
From Et (ethyl) and OAc (acetate); some papers abbreviate it EA. It is considered a greener choice than dichloromethane for many extractions. Ethyl acetate occurs naturally in fruit and wine, where high levels produce a solvent-like "nail polish" fault.
