equiv stands for Equivalent(s), a chemistry abbreviation.
Unit used in synthetic procedures to express the amount of a reagent relative to the limiting starting material, in moles. Adding 1.2 equiv of a reagent means 1.2 moles for every mole of substrate, a slight excess that pushes a reaction to completion.
Example: To the amine (1.0 equiv) in DCM were added triethylamine (2.0 equiv) and acetyl chloride (1.1 equiv).
Usage notes
Also written eq or equiv. Catalyst amounts are usually given as mol% instead, for example 5 mol% palladium. In older analytical chemistry an equivalent was the amount of substance reacting with one mole of hydrogen ions, the basis of normality, a different meaning from the synthetic usage.
