E2EE stands for End-to-end encryption, a cybersecurity abbreviation.

Encryption in which only the communicating users hold the keys, so messages are encrypted on the sender's device and decrypted only on the recipient's, and the service provider cannot read them in transit or on its servers. Signal, WhatsApp and iMessage use E2EE.

Example: Because the chat is E2EE, the company says it couldn't hand message contents to investigators.

Usage notes

The Signal Protocol, developed by Open Whisper Systems around 2013, became the basis of WhatsApp's E2EE rollout to all users in 2016. Law enforcement agencies argue it hampers investigations, prompting long debates over backdoors and client-side scanning. Metadata, such as who talked to whom and when, may still be visible to providers. Often shortened to E2E.
