DPM stands for Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, a degree abbreviation also used in medicine.

Four-year degree for podiatrists, physicians and surgeons who specialize in the foot, ankle and lower leg. After graduation, podiatrists complete a three-year surgical residency and are licensed by individual states, which define the limits of their scope of practice.

Example: Our podiatrist, Dr. Owens, DPM, performs bunion correction and diabetic foot care.

Usage notes

Written D.P.M. Podiatric medical schools are accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), and graduates take the APMLE board exams. Podiatrists are distinct from orthopedic surgeons, who are MDs or DOs, although both treat foot and ankle conditions.
