DPhil stands for Doctor of Philosophy, a degree abbreviation.

Name for the research doctorate at the University of Oxford and the University of Sussex, equivalent in every respect to a PhD elsewhere. Oxford DPhil students typically spend three to four years researching a thesis that is examined in an oral exam called a viva voce.

Example: He completed his DPhil in history at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.

Usage notes

Written D.Phil. The abbreviation follows English word order, unlike the Latin-order PhD. Oxford students start as probationer research students and must pass Transfer and Confirmation of Status reviews before the final examination. British vivas are usually conducted by one internal and one external examiner.
