Clinical doctorate for nurses that focuses on translating evidence into practice, quality improvement and leadership rather than original research. It prepares nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists and nurse executives and ends with a DNP project instead of a dissertation.
Example: The clinic's new medical director is a family nurse practitioner who holds a DNP.
Written D.N.P. In 2004 the American Association of Colleges of Nursing recommended moving advanced practice nursing education to the doctoral level by 2015. That target was not met for most specialties, but nurse anesthesia programs became doctoral-only for students entering in 2022. A PhD in nursing is the research-focused alternative.
