DLitt stands for Doctor of Letters, a degree abbreviation.
Higher doctorate in the humanities awarded by British, Irish and Commonwealth universities for a distinguished body of published scholarship, and often granted honorarily to writers and public figures. American universities more often confer the honorary LHD instead.
Example: The novelist received an honorary DLitt from the University of Edinburgh at the summer graduation.
Usage notes
Written D.Litt.; Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin use LittD. The Latin original is Doctor Litterarum. An earned DLitt requires years of scholarship beyond a PhD, judged on published work. Honorary recipients conventionally add "honoris causa" or "Hon" when listing it.
