CAGS stands for Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study, a degree abbreviation.
Post-master's credential of about 30 credits, offered mainly by universities in New England and the Northeast, in counseling, education, educational leadership and school psychology. It often satisfies state requirements for advanced licensure without a doctorate.
Example: She completed a CAGS in educational leadership to qualify for a principal's license in Massachusetts.
Usage notes
Similar credentials are called the Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) elsewhere. Unlike the EdS, a CAGS is usually classified as a certificate rather than a degree, although the coursework is comparable. Some programs let students apply CAGS credits toward a later EdD.
