CategoriesMedical

CVST stands for Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, a neurology abbreviation.

Clot in the veins or venous sinuses that drain blood from the brain, causing headache, seizures, focal deficits, raised intracranial pressure and sometimes hemorrhage. It mostly affects younger adults, particularly women using estrogen-containing contraceptives or who are pregnant or postpartum.

Example: Severe headache and papilledema three weeks postpartum; MR venogram shows superior sagittal sinus thrombosis: CVST, heparin started.

Usage notes

Anticoagulation is the standard treatment even when the clot has already caused bleeding into the brain. In 2021 a rare syndrome of CVST with low platelets (vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia) was linked to certain adenovirus-vector COVID-19 vaccines. Also called cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) or dural venous sinus thrombosis.
