1. Cosecant

Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations

Reciprocal of sine: csc θ = 1/sin θ, or hypotenuse over opposite side. It is undefined wherever sine is zero, at 0°, 180° and their multiples.

Example: If sin θ = 0.25, then csc θ = 4.

American textbooks write csc, while British and Indian ones generally use cosec. Few calculators have a csc key, so it is computed as 1/sin. It appears in identities such as 1 + cot²θ = csc²θ and in the derivative of cot x, which is −csc²x.

2. Comprehensive stroke center (CSC)

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Highest level of stroke center certification in the US, for hospitals able to treat the most complex strokes around the clock, with endovascular thrombectomy, neurosurgery, neurocritical care beds and advanced imaging. Certification is granted by bodies such as The Joint Commission.

Example: EMS bypassed two hospitals to bring the suspected LVO patient to the CSC.

The Joint Commission began certifying comprehensive stroke centers in 2012. Other tiers include acute stroke-ready hospitals, primary stroke centers and thrombectomy-capable stroke centers. Regional systems use prehospital severity scales to send suspected large vessel occlusions directly to CSCs, balancing speed against capability.

3. Congregation of Holy Cross (CSC)

Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations

Holy Cross priests and brothers, a congregation founded in France in 1837 by Blessed Basil Moreau, use these initials. In the US it founded and still sponsors the University of Notre Dame, the University of Portland and Stonehill College.

Example: Notre Dame's president is traditionally a priest of the CSC.

From the Latin Congregatio a Sancta Cruce. The congregation also has sisters' communities that share Moreau's founding vision. Brother André Bessette, CSC, founder of St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, was canonized in 2010.
