1. Cyclophosphamide

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Alkylating chemotherapy and immunosuppressive drug, sold as Cytoxan, used for breast cancer, lymphomas and leukemias, conditioning before stem cell transplant, and severe autoimmune disease. Oncology protocols often abbreviate it CTX.

Example: AC regimen: doxorubicin 60 mg/m2 and CTX 600 mg/m2 IV every 2 weeks.

Cyclophosphamide's metabolite acrolein irritates the bladder and can cause hemorrhagic cystitis, prevented with hydration and mesna at high doses. It also causes infertility, so fertility preservation is discussed before treatment. In microbiology CTX means cefotaxime, an unrelated antibiotic.

2. Cefotaxime

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Standard microbiology abbreviation for cefotaxime, a third-generation cephalosporin used in bacterial meningitis and neonatal sepsis. Laboratory reports use CTX when listing susceptibility results.

Example: Isolate: E. coli, CTX resistant, ESBL screen positive.

Cefotaxime has been preferred over ceftriaxone in newborns because ceftriaxone can displace bilirubin and precipitate with calcium. In microbiology, resistance to cefotaxime is used to screen for extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (as in the CTX-M enzyme family). In oncology CTX more often means cyclophosphamide, so context matters.
