CPDLC stands for Controller-pilot data link communications, an aviation abbreviation.
Text messaging between air traffic controllers and flight crews, used for clearances, frequency changes and requests instead of voice radio. CPDLC is standard over oceans and is increasingly used at busy airports for departure clearances.
Example: Shanwick sent our oceanic clearance by CPDLC, and the captain accepted it with one button press.
Usage notes
Data link reduces readback errors and frequency congestion, and messages come from standardized sets so both sides see identical wording. In the US the FAA's Data Comm program brought CPDLC departure clearances to dozens of airport towers starting in 2016, followed by en-route service. Europe has mandated it above FL285 in much of its airspace.
