CFI stands for Certified flight instructor, an aviation abbreviation.
Pilot holding an FAA flight instructor certificate, authorized to give flight and ground training and to endorse students for solo flights and checkrides. Many airline-bound pilots work as a CFI to build the 1,500 hours required for an ATP certificate.
Example: After passing her CFI checkride, she started teaching at the local flight school to build time.
Usage notes
The FAA document is officially a "flight instructor certificate"; "certified" or "certificated" flight instructor is the conventional expansion. A CFI must already hold a commercial or ATP certificate. Add-on ratings include CFII for instrument instruction and MEI for multiengine instruction. Instructors log every hour they teach as flight time.
