BVLOS stands for Beyond visual line of sight, an aviation abbreviation.
Drone operation in which the remote pilot cannot see the aircraft directly, relying on cameras, detect-and-avoid systems and data links. BVLOS flights enable long-range uses such as pipeline inspection and package delivery but require special approval in most countries.
Example: Delivery drones need BVLOS approval to fly several miles from their base without a visual observer.
Usage notes
Its counterpart, VLOS (visual line of sight), is the default for most drone flying under FAA Part 107 and EASA's open category. The FAA proposed a dedicated rule for BVLOS operations, Part 108, in 2025. Until such rules take effect, operators rely on individual waivers and exemptions.
